Help us spotlight the next generation of women in STEAM

When we started this blog, our goal was to highlight some of the ideas from our book, “Please Stay: How Women in Tech Survive and Thrive”. The most amazing thing from it was the sense of community and camaraderie among the readers. “All of a sudden, we had hundreds of people responding to us, and wanting to talk to us about their industry. The number of people that said, ‘is this book written for my daughter?’ was humbling.” – Debra Christmas
Now we’d like to tap into those community roots to spotlight the next generation of women changemakers. The young girls who are starting to blaze a trail today, whether they are 6 or 16. We certainly know a few and we know there are so many others out there. So, we’re putting on our crowdsourcing hats, and asking you to help us!
We want you to start looking in your communities and identifying young girls that you’d like to see profiled for their amazing work in STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Art and Math)
A key focus for us is ensuring we have an inclusive set of young women featured as future changemakers in STEAM. We want to reach beyond our cities and identify these young women worldwide. And we recognize not all young women interested in technology are daughters of women in technology. Further, we would love to ensure that there is representation from people who are exposed to STEAM opportunities, in different countries, across different cultures, and from different economic backgrounds.
It’s more than just ‘play’ for your younger loved ones. It’s ‘work’!
“We would like to get the views of these changemakers and their parents on what they might be thinking about for a future career. And whether their current love of science and technology, alongside the more recent introduction of art to the mix, is something that they think might translate into something they would love to do in their jobs in adulthood.” – Kelley Irwin
For parents, our key message is that there’s inspiration for kids that can come from far and wide. Your action point as a parent is mostly to bring your curiosity to the front as it relates to your child’s world. Ask them who they admire. Watch a show they pick in the space of technology and discuss the topics. We’ve always found the most rewarding conversations come from encouraging kids to lead the narrative.
We’re committed to bringing equitable causes beyond their assigned months
Often causes get relegated to the months that are created to bring awareness to them. Black History Month is marked by many and forgotten after February. Much the same can be said for Women’s History Month in March, when the actions unfortunately can be focused on awareness and communication instead of true change.
We are committed to carrying the intersectionality of those two areas of impact forward. International Day of the Girl is on the 11th of October in 2022. From now, until October, for 5 months, we would love to curate your ideas of the next generation of changemaker women in STEAM.
Please drop us a note if you know someone. Thank you.
